Novodevichiy Cemetery Tour

If you drive around New Maiden Convent, you will see a spacious park located to the South of the ancient walls of the cloister. Walking through the gate of this park, you will see alleys, flower beds and beautiful sculptures – this is the grounds of the New Maiden or Novodevichiy Cemetery. Many famous Russian and Soviet people are buried here, many of an international acclaim. Almost each and every grave has monument, and these monuments will tell you what the occupation of the achievement of this person was.

The private tour through the grounds of this necropolis focuses on the cultural and political life of Russia and the Soviet Union in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Graves of famous Russian writers such as Anton Chekhov and Mikhail Bulgakov are located here, along with the final resting place of famous Russian composers such as Nikolai Rubinstein and Dmitry Shostakovich. Stunningly beautiful dancing ballerina sculpture represents the Bolshoi Theatre first dancer Galina Ulanova, while the next monument represents another Soviet-era cultural icon, a comedy actor and former director of the Moscow Circus, Yury Nikulin. Probably, not known to foreign visitors, these names ring the hearts of each Russian, whereas the political leaders buried here once enjoyed international acclaim and changed the course of history of the world. Nikita Khrushchev and Boris Yeltsin both rest in peace under the shade of century-old trees here, along with a host of Soviet-era heroes, scientists, and generals.

The tour of the Novodevichiy Cemetery is indeed an exciting journey through the cultural and political history of Russia, complete with a pleasant walk through the shady alleys away from the noise of the city.
