New Tretyakov Gallery Tour

If you wish to see Russian avant-garde art, social realism and Soviet underground paintings, take a tour with a private guide of the New State Tretyakov Gallery, in the building near the Gorky Park.

Internationally acclaimed masterpieces by Russian artists are on display here. Inter pares:

      -  Vassily Kandinsky, the founder of abstract expressionism,

      -  Kazimir Malevich, the developer of suprematism and non-figurative or abstract art;

      -  Vladimir Tatlin, the cultivator of constructivism in painting,

      -  Mark Shagal and Pavel Filonov.

Further on you can trace the transformation of the Russian art as the Soviet regime builds pressure on the artists forcing them to abandon all the experimentation with styles and forms of expression and create easy-to-understand canvases featuring happy Soviet people building socialism or praising their leaders such as Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin. Yet, even during Soviet time, artists were able to create real masterpieces without the heavy propaganda charge required of them – skillful, lyrical and stunningly beautiful paintings that once toured international shows and won “capitalist” critics’ acclaim – all still worth appreciation today.

Museum is open every day except Monday. 

PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to see old Russian icons and paintings from 12th till 20th century, those are shown in a different building in the heart of Moscow - The State Tretyakov Gallery.
