Your visit to the Gulag Museum in Moscow help you to learn about the tyranny of the communist system and to commemorate the victims of the regime. The museum exposition gives information about the horrors of collectivization, the purges of the top government and party members, and mass repressions that landed millions of innocent people in labour camps. The acronym GULAG stands for the Chief Administration of Corrective Labour Camps, and the museum exposition focuses on how it was set up in the 1930s, operated in until the 1950s to fuel the construction of industrial infrastructure with cheap labour, and was finally dismantled by Nikita Khrushchev.
GULAG Museum is run and funded by the state and its existence in modern Russia is a sign that the society is reconciling with the darker pages of the Soviet past. After all, memorials commemorating the tragic events in the past help us to avoid making the same mistake again.
