The Moscow Metro is famous for the combination of its two key features – efficiency and beauty. Initiated in 1935 by the Soviet Government not only a major infrastructure project, but also as a propaganda tool of unimaginable scale, Moscow metro is still being built and extended today, with 300 km of tunnels and tracks and close to 200 stations – and yes, ALL the stations are built with unique design, and dozens of them are built like palaces. No visit to Moscow would be complete without seeing the most beautiful Metro stations, some of which won international design awards. Byzantine mosaics and frescoes with golden background, massive bronze chandeliers and life-size bronze statues, backlit stained glass panels and palatial arches and vaults – all to show how happy, industrious and handsome Soviet people were. The Soviet authorities spared no expense in making these palaces for the people their unique propaganda tool.
