New Maiden Convent with a Guide

New Maiden (Novodevichiy) Convent is a truly medieval, virtually unchanged architectural ensemble located in the centre of the city, and listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a must-see on any quality sightseeing itinerary and a rare opportunity to explore the medieval Russian architecture and lifestyle without traveling far.

Founded in 1524 by the Moscow Prince, New Maiden Convent served as the royal nunnery, and the Russian Tsars were its patrons. It is closely linked to the history of Russia, and served as the place of exile of princesses and tsarinas who dropped out of favour. Daughter-in-law of Ivan the Terrible, wife of the last Russian Tsar of the Rurik Dynasty, Tsarina Irina retreated here during the Time of Troubles brought by the dynasty crisis. First wife of Peter the Great, Tsarina Eudoxia, is buried here, alongside with his sister, Regent Sophia who tried – and failed – to wrestle the power from her brother. Napoleon with his half a million army came to take Moscow in 1812, but failed to hold it – his cavalry stayed in New Maiden Convent. These events and places are described in the novel by Leo Tolstoy War and Peace… Indeed, a private tour of the New Maiden convent will give you an opportunity to learn more about the medieval Russian lifestyle and the twists of history, complete with unique photo opportunities.
